Kashagan is one of the largest and most expensive offshore projects in the world. This project including onshore made oil & gas history.
Everything that can done in the oil and gas industry has been tested in this project. Let's see the main parts of the plant. This project consists of several islands located in the Caspian Sea, each one of these offshore complexes or artificial islands has been designed and built to deal with the unique challenges associated with producing Oil and Gas from this region of the Caspian Sea.
The reservoir fluid coming from Satellite Wells and from each Island will be transported to the main Island by means of dedicated multiphase production lines where it is comingled with fluids from main Island wells for further treatment. The crude oil is partially stabilized through flash gas separation and sent onshore via the pipeline.
The associated gas is dehydrated offshore and a portion of this gas, with a lower H2S content, is then sent onshore via the Gas Trunkline for further treatment. The remaining gas is re-injected into the reservoir offshore at the main Island by an Injection compressor with a maximum operating pressure of 800 bars.
Oil Separation is made by three separators called HP (High pressure) MP (Medium Pressure) LP ( low pressure). Gas separated in the MP and LP Separators is compressed in the Flash Gas Compression Units, dehydrated and mixed with any excess HP gas not exported and re-injected using the Rich Gas Injection Compressors facilities (RGI) which increases the gas pressure to the re-injection pressure.
The offshore and onshore receiving and process facilities are managed with optimum manning levels and with strictly controlled and restricted access to all process areas during LIVE production operations. Due to the hazardous nature of the process fluid which includes very high concentrations of H2S, high pressures involved in gas injection, and the harsh environmental conditions experienced during the winter time (-40°C).
Anyone who worked in this plant can be satisfied with contributing to the construction, commissioning, start-up, and maintenance of such a complex plant with high hazards and almost prohibitive environmental conditions. A special thank also to our colleague and leader Engineer Pasquariello Benedetto Who has contributed in all phases of the project with prestigious positions recognized by the reference letters below.
