The next generation of IQ multi-turn and IQT part-turn robust intelligent electric actuators is designed to delivers top performances coupled with unrivaled reliability for all type and size of valves. It offers everything you’d expect from 60 years of innovation; simple wireless commissioning, reliable performances, robustness, time-proven design, precise and accurate control, top of the line diagnostic and detailed dataloggin capabilities, waterthight and hazardous area enclosures, manual override in case of emergencies, and more.
Actuator position accuracy and precision mainly come from the absolute encoder and its battery. Not all absolute encoders are the same, IQ3 encoder can output 8000 turns where typical encoders output 2000 turns.
The battery assure encoder and local display operation in the event of power failure. This feature allows the actuator to know its exact position if driven manually. When power gets back up, there is no “offset” in the position sensor and operation can resume smoothly. Even more, the battery provides power to the remote (relay) indication allowing the control system to know if valve is fully open or fully closed. The battery also allow for actuator setup when no power is availaible on site to ensure versatile commissioning. The standard 9V battery is available worldwide with a high or low temperature type available from Rotork. Battery status is available at all time either localy or remotly, based on 20 years of typical applications experience, the expected battery life is up to 5 years. As all settings are stored in non-volatile memory and position sensed by the Rotork absolute encoder backed-up by the 9V battery, security and reliability of configuration and position is always assured.
The IQ range features unique double sealed enclosure ensure the actuator is sealed to IP66/68 and NEMA 4/6 certifications. The explosion proof Exde enclosures allow the actuator to be used in Class 1, Div 1, B, C, D and Class 2, Div 1, E, F, G areas on all temperature range options. The actuator can have oprional SIL2 and SIL3 ratings if required.
All Rotork IQ range actuators are set up non-intrusive infrared and bluetooth commissioning. Industry leading predictive maintenance and datalogging capabilities with the adequate security to back it up

When purchasing an actuator, the first thing to do is to verify if the actuator flange and coupling flanges of the valve match with each other, and if required, the adapter must be prepared. Where the worm screw is present as in the IQ3ML Pro actuator, it must be to provide the complete length of the stem travel of the valve or control valve or whatever, and based on it, the actuator will be assembled for this scope. The figure below shows the competency of the actuator where it arrives

As you can see from the photo above the actuator is fixed on one side of the adapter, and the other side of the adapter is fixed on the body valve. Normally the adapter is provided by the actuator manufacturer, but sometimes it happens that due to the additional costs (forgot to order), the actuator company refuses to build it, and sometimes the client asks to build it from third parties with a result that will be double expensive. For this reason, it is necessary to provide all the data correctly to the actuator manufacturer. The actuator must arrive already with its adapter. We have seen many projects and some of them had issues with adaptors which arrived wrong or they forgot to order it.
In this case, to build it the cost will be more than the actuator itself. If the issue is just one actuator, no problem, but when we are talking about dozens of actuators it would be an economic disaster. For this reason, we ask you to trust us, we can save time and first of all money
Greasing the bush ring before the installation is very important for this type of actuator. Poor lubrication of the bush ring can lead to complete failure of the actuator. Be very careful especially if the actuator is installed without any protection from atmospheric agents such as dust, huge temperature changes between summer and winter, etc. The figures below shows what happen an actuator without bush ring lubrification.
As you can see from figures above, due to no lubrification in the 'Thrust Base Housing', caused the actuator damaged. As you can see also from the figures above, the thrust base housing is full covered with dust mixed with old grease (very bad for actuators).
Another thing which I would like to highlight is in case will decide to order a Thrust Base Housing from Rotork, it will arrive fully assembled but without the center hole on the Bush Ring. The hole will be machining on the field, so, in this case require a turn machine.
Warning: failure to remove the bearing assembly and O-ring from the drive bush prior to machining may result in damage to the bearing. For more details see figure below
We know this type of actuator perfectly for over 27 years, since the first models in the experimental phase. At the level of regulation such as a choke valve, Rotork it has no any competition with other type of actuators.
The only thing that to be careful is about the order because there are many factors that to be consider, therebefore, if you get one of them wrong it is not possible to go back, or better sometimes it is possible but it requires a lot of extra money. For this reason we are here to recommend the right actuator based on your process needs, including the type of electrical and mechanical connection.
You can order directly the actuator here with all the functions that you need based to your process, we will help you from purchase to installation in the plant. For more details fill out the dedicated form. Also you can see the PDF file here which include all internal item of actuator
Another feature added is closed-loop control. Closed-loop control takes the on-off/bang-bang control or PID control methodologies that are typically used in a PLC or discrete PID controller and incorporates them into the range. Multi-turn non-modulating IQ3 Pro actuators use a setpoint positioning method known as “bang-bang”, while part-turn IQT3 Pro and IQ3M Pro actuators use the PID closed-loop control method.
The IQ3 Pro range valve actuators are robust, flexible, and reliable. They have a double-sealed enclosure, ‘non-intrusive’ commissioning, and predictive maintenance capabilities using the in-built data loggers. Control and commissioning can be done via a Rotork app, Bluetooth® Setting Tool Pro, or local control knobs. Data logs can be downloaded to the app, then exported to Insight 2 or sent via Rotork’s cloud-based intelligent asset management (iAM) system.
The functionality and reliability is available for valves of virtually every size and description, including multi-turn, part-turn, linear, isolating and modulating, with watertight and hazardous area approvals to all internationally recognised standards.
Below the list which required to make a perfect order
Rotork actuators are equipped with 'intelligent asset management' program which means they use data loggers, such as the IQ3 Pro range. This program collect all data from vibration, temperature and torque, including the number of starts and whether the unit has lost power. This enables engineers to assess the health of an actuator and make recommendations around maintenance. Based on our experience they are great actuators.
All this information can be downloaded with the program which Rotork supply and communication will be via Bluetooth between a laptop and actuators, or even with a smartphone. All this is really wonderful because it is possible to make the connection without intrusive activities, this is very convenient, especially on Hazardous areas
Normally the internal torque of actuators series IQ3 pro are configured with 40% only (factory setting). During its operation, it may require to increase its torque due to dirty inside body valve and require more power to operate it (till 70% is normal)
This is possible, but in our opinion, the engineers must communicate to the responsible area that has changed (increased) the internal torque of the actuator because stem packing (or body valve) got too hard during operation. This is a warning that the next opportunity is required to inspect the stem or body valve. The torque can be also set to 100% (maximum) but if the valve gets stuck with 100% of torque there is no other choice except to open the body valve.
The orientation of the actuator is very important for the life of the actuator itself. For more details see figure below

Rotork’s extensive experience with the equipment, with energy clients including major names in the oil and gas industries, has precipitated important development work involving the use of Rotork IQML modulating linear electric actuators to improve the plant efficiency .
Rotork has worked closely with both manufacturer and enduser to verify that all actuators performance continuous operating requirement. Within the actuator, accurate positioning is ensured by fitting the Rotork Folomatic analogue position controller with appropriate deadband settings, whilst the actuator’s torque/thrust values are custom-programmed to suit continuous reversal demands in output direction. Improved lubrication of the output screw has also been identified and implemented to ensure long-term trouble-free operation. In addition, the actuator’s data logger has provided essential operating data for a detailed study enabling the manufacturer to identify the changing nature of the air flow at the various positions of the inlet guide vanes.
These developments have been further assisted by comprehensive testing at Rotork’s research and development facilities at Bath in the UK, where millions of starts and stops in conditions replicating accurate site conditions have been successfully carried out in arduous bench testing programmes. As a result of the test and development work, Rotork has modified existing installations by introducing IQML actuators at a number of major refinery sites including Qatargas and Rasgas, Kazakstan.
Rotork’s activities with metering pump sets continue to grow as manufacturers incorporate Rotork electric valve actuators within standard products and packaged plants.
The metering pump is a positive displacement chemical dosing device with the ability to automatically vary its dosing capacity as process conditions dictate. The pump features a high level of repetitive accuracy and is capable of pumping a wide range of chemicals including corrosives or viscous liquids and slurries in hazardous environments including oil and gas installations, refineries and chemical processing plants. The pumping action is operated by a reciprocating piston which is either in direct contact with the process fluid or shielded from the fluid by a diaphragm.
