Vegapuls 64 Radar sensor for continuous level measurement of liquids
PS64.AHGGPKHXA2AXX
(All-round radar instrument with 80 GHz – the frequency of the future)

The VEGAPULS 64 is a radar level sensor that measures the distance to a product surface by emitting a continuous microwave signal, receiving the reflected echo, and calculating the frequency shift between the emitted and received signals, which is proportional to the distance and thus the level. Its key principle is frequency shifting, which, combined with a narrow, highly focused 80 GHz radar beam, allows for accurate and reliable non-contact level measurement, even in challenging conditions with poor reflectivity, surface turbulence, or internal tank obstructions.
How it Works
- Signal Transmission: The VEGAPULS 64 sends out a continuous radar signal (microwaves) from its antenna.
- Signal Reflection: The surface of the liquid reflects this signal back towards the sensor.
- Signal Reception: The antenna receives the reflected signal (echo).
- Frequency Shifting: A difference in frequency between the emitted and received signal (frequency shift) occurs due to the Doppler effect and the distance to the product surface.
- Distance Calculation: This frequency shift is directly proportional to the time it takes for the signal to travel to the product and back. The sensor uses this to calculate the distance to the product surface.
- Level Calculation: The determined distance is then used to calculate the level within the vessel and is outputted as a measured value.
Key Advantages
- 80 GHz Technology: The high frequency results in a very narrow and focused beam angle.
- Improved Accuracy & Reliability: The concentrated beam allows the sensor to avoid interference from tank fittings or agitators and get better reflections from poorly reflective media like compressed gases/liquids, leading to more accurate and reliable measurements.
- Non-Contact Measurement: The sensor operates without touching the product, reducing wear and tear and leading to maintenance-free, high plant availability.
- Minimal Interference: The narrow beam angle helps to avoid unwanted reflections from tank bottoms, even at low levels.
Application area
Special advantages are the small process fittings for small tanks or tight spaces. The very good signal focusing allows use in vessels with many internal installations. The VEGAPULS 64 is a sensor for continuous level measurement of liquids. With small tanks or in case of narrow space the small process fittings offer special advantages. The very good signal focusing enables the use in vessels with many installations such as e.g. stirrers and heating spirals.
