This "time of flight" is directly proportional to the distance to the product's surface, allowing the sensor to determine and output the continuous level of the medium.

Here's a step-by-step breakdown of its working principle:

  1. Microwave Emission: The VEGAPULS 66's antenna emits a very short radar (microwave) pulse.
  2. Signal Reflection: This pulse travels towards the product's surface, which then reflects the signal back towards the sensor.
  3. Echo Reception: The antenna system receives the reflected signal (echo).
  4. Time-of-Flight Measurement: The sensor precisely measures the time it takes for the signal to travel from the antenna to the product and return.
  5. Level Calculation: The measured time is converted into a distance, which is then used to calculate and determine the continuous level of the product in the vessel.
  6. Output Signal: The calculated level is converted into an appropriate output signal (e.g., 4-20mA, HART, or digital protocols) and sent to a monitoring system
