The VEGAPULS 69 is a radar sensor that uses high-frequency (80 GHz) microwave signals to measure the continuous level of bulk solids in containers and silos. The sensor emits a highly focused radar beam that strikes the material surface and is reflected back to the sensor. By measuring the time it takes for the signal to return and the intensity of the reflection, the system calculates the distance to the product surface and, consequently, the material's level. Its high frequency and narrow beam angle allow for reliable measurements even with internal obstructions and poorly reflecting materials like powders, ash, and sawdus

How it Works (Step-by-Step)

  1. Signal Transmission:
    The VEGAPULS 69 transmits a radar signal at a frequency of approximately 80 GHz into the container or silo.
  2. Focused Beam: The 80 GHz frequency allows for a very narrow, focused radar beam (around 4°), which minimizes interference from internal installations or buildup on the vessel walls.
  3. Reflection: When the radar beam hits the surface of the bulk material, the signal is reflected back toward the sensor.
  4. Signal Reception: The sensor receives these reflected signals.
  5. Time of Flight: The internal electronics measure the time it takes for the radar pulse to travel from the sensor to the product and back.
  6. Level Calculation: Using this time-of-flight data and the known speed of the radar waves, the sensor calculates the exact distance to the product surface.
  7. Level Output: This distance is then converted into a level measurement and can be outputted to a control system.

  • High Frequency (80 GHz): This enables excellent signal focusing, reducing background noise and improving reliability.
  • Narrow Beam Angle (4°): The focused beam prevents reflections from vessel walls and internal structures from interfering with the measurement of the bulk material.
  • High Dynamic Range (120 dB): This allows the sensor to detect even very weak reflections from materials with poor reflective properties, such as plastic powders, fly ash, and dry sawdust.
  • Non-Contact Measurement: The sensor operates without physical contact with the product, preventing wear and contamination. 

Application area

Special advantages are the small process fittings for small vessels or tight spaces. The very good signal focusing allows use in large silos or vessels with many internal installations.
The VEGAPULS 69 is a sensor for continuous measurement of bulk solids under different process conditions. It is ideal for level measurement in very high silos, large bunkers and segmented vessels. Thanks to the very good signal focussing a simple setup and reliable measurement is ensured. The VEGAPULS 69 can be equipped with an encapsulated plastic antenna or a lens antenna integrated in the metal flange. This enables the optimum adaption to different application areas.
