The VEGAPULS 61 uses the non-contact radar principle to measure the level of liquids by emitting extremely short microwave pulses from its antenna system towards the product surface, where they are reflected and received back by the sensor. The time it takes for the signals to travel from emission to reception is directly proportional to the distance to the surface, which the sensor uses to calculate the product's level. This method provides accurate, continuous measurements that are independent of process conditions like temperature or pressure, ensuring high plant availability and maintenance-free operation.

How the Radar Principle Works

  1. Microwave Emission: The VEGAPULS 61's antenna sends out very brief microwave pulses in the direction of the liquid.
  2. Reflection: These signals travel at the speed of light and are reflected off the surface of the liquid.
  3. Signal Reception: The antenna system then receives these reflected signals.
  4. Time-of-Flight Measurement: A special time-stretching procedure is used to accurately measure the extremely short time between the emission and reception of the signals.
  5. Level Calculation: The time it takes for the signal to return is directly proportional to the distance to the liquid's surface. By measuring this time, the sensor can precisely calculate the liquid level.
