Magnetrol Eclipse 705 Guided Radar Level Transmitter X705-510A-C11+

X7MR-N430-168

The Enhanced Eclipse® Model 705 Transmitter is a looppowered, 24 VDC liquid-level transmitter based on the revolutionary Guided Wave Radar (GWR) technology. Encompassing a number of significant engineering accomplishments, this leading-edge level transmitter is designed to provide measurement performance well beyond that of many traditional technologies, as well as “through-air” radar. The innovative enclosure is a first in the industry, orienting dual compartments (wiring and electronics) in the same plane, and angled to maximize ease of wiring, configuration, and data display.
One universal transmitter can be used with all probe types and offers enhanced reliability for use in SIL 2/SIL 3 hardware systems. ECLIPSE supports the FDT/DTM standard and, with the PACTware™ Frame Program, allows for additional configuration and trending flexibility.

The Magnetrol X7MR (probe) likely refers to a Magnetrol 700 series guided wave radar (GWR) level transmitter, which works on the time domain reflectometry (TDR) principle. A pulse of electromagnetic energy is sent down a probe (waveguide) and reflected when it encounters a change in dielectric constant, such as the surface of the process medium. The transmitter measures the time of flight of this reflected pulse to calculate the distance to the media surface, which is then converted into a level reading

Key Components and Process

  1. Electromagnetic Pulse Generation: The transmitter sends out a short pulse of electromagnetic energy down the probe.
  2. Wave Propagation: This pulse travels along the specialized waveguide.
  3. Reflection: When the pulse encounters the surface of the process medium, which has a different dielectric constant than the air or vapor in the tank, it reflects back towards the transmitter.
  4. Signal Reception: A sophisticated, high-speed electronic circuit captures the reflected pulse and measures the time it took for the round trip.
  5. Level Calculation: Using the known velocity of light and the measured travel time, the distance to the surface is calculated (D = C * T/2, where C is the speed of light and T is the travel time).
  6. Level Output: This distance is then converted into a level signal (e.g., 4-20 mA output) and displayed, allowing for continuous monitoring and control.

Benefits of Guided Wave Radar

  • Robustness: The principle is not affected by changes in density, turbulence, foam, or other media conditions, providing reliable measurements in challenging industrial environments.
  • Accuracy: GWR technology offers high accuracy, often up to 1mm, for both liquid and interface level measurements.
  • Versatility: A single transmitter can often be used with different probe types to suit various applications and tank internals
