Magnetrol 704 - Horizon Guided Wave Radar Level Transmitter 704-5011-540 +
7EA-A110-024

The Magnetrol 704 is a Guided Wave Radar (GWR) level transmitter that operates on the principle of Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR). It sends pulses of electromagnetic energy down a probe, which reflect off the liquid surface. The transmitter's high-speed circuitry measures the time it takes for the pulse to travel to the liquid and back, converting this transit time into an accurate distance and, therefore, the liquid level.
Here's a breakdown of its working principle
- Probe and Pulse Generation: The 704 transmitter has a probe (either a cable or a rod) that extends into the process vessel. The transmitter's electronics generate a high-frequency electromagnetic pulse that travels down this probe.
- Reflection at the Liquid Surface: When the pulse encounters the surface of the liquid, a reflection occurs. This reflection happens because the liquid has a different dielectric constant than the surrounding air or vapor.
- Pulse Reception and Transit Time Measurement: The same probe that transmitted the pulse also acts as the receiver. A high-speed timing circuit within the transmitter captures the reflected signal and measures the total time the pulse took to travel down the probe and back up.
- Level Calculation: Since the pulse travels at the velocity of light, the measured transit time is directly proportional to the distance to the liquid surface. The transmitter's electronics convert this transit time into a level reading, which is then displayed.
Key advantages of this technology include:
- Virtually unaffected by process conditions: The GWR technology is robust and tolerates turbulence, foaming, or boiling liquids.
- Accurate and reliable: The time-based measurement provides precise and repeatable level readings.
- Versatile: The probe design can be configured to meet different process needs.
