The MAGNETROL R95 is a Pulse Burst Radar level transmitter that works by sending short bursts of microwave energy down a probe and measuring the transit time of the reflected signal from the liquid surface. This time-of-flight is then converted into a distance, which is used to calculate and display the liquid level in a process vessel.
Working Principle
Signal Transmission: The R95 emits short bursts of 5.8 or 6.3 GHz microwave energy from its top-mounted antenna.
Reflection: These pulses travel down towards the liquid surface and reflect off it.
Signal Reception: The reflected signal is captured by the transmitter's antenna.
Time Measurement: Sophisticated circuitry measures the time it takes for the pulse to travel from the antenna to the liquid surface and back.
Level Calculation: Using the formula Distance = Speed of light x Transit Time / 2, the transmitter calculates the distance to the liquid.
Display: This distance is then used to determine the liquid level, taking into account the tank height and sensor offset, and this value is displayed on the transmitter's LCD.
Key Features of the R95
Pulse Burst Technology: The R95 uses this method to emit microwave energy, allowing it to distinguish the true liquid surface from background noise and other reflections.
Top-Mounted: The transmitter is typically installed at the top of a storage or process vessel, looking downwards.
Loop-Powered: The R95 is a loop-powered transmitter, making it energy efficient.
Versatile Applications: It is suitable for measuring liquids and slurries in various vessels, including hydrocarbons and water-based media.
