krohne Radar level transmitters / OPTIWAVE 5400 C
VFDB00W00021C4801A0FP0000 - (For liquids in basic process applications)
The OPTIWAVE 5400 C measures liquid levels using the Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) radar principle. It emits a radar signal whose frequency increases linearly, the signal reflects off the product surface, and the time delay between the transmitted and received frequencies is used to calculate the distance to the surface. A Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) converts this frequency difference into a frequency spectrum, from which the distance is precisely determined to calculate the level within the tank.

Step-by-Step Working Principle
- Signal Emission: The device transmits a high-frequency radar signal that continuously and linearly increases in frequency during the measurement.
- Signal Reflection: This radar signal is directed towards the liquid surface, where it reflects.
- Signal Reception: The reflected signal travels back to the device's antenna with a time delay, which is dependent on the distance to the liquid surface.
- Frequency Difference Calculation: The transmitter compares the frequency of the received signal with the frequency of the signal it is currently transmitting. The difference between these two frequencies is directly proportional to the time delay and, therefore, to the distance to the product surface.
- Frequency Spectrum Analysis: A Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) is applied to this frequency difference, transforming it into a frequency spectrum.
- Distance and Level Calculation: The distance to the liquid surface is then calculated from this frequency spectrum. The final level is determined by subtracting this measured distance from the total height of the tank.
Key Features for Operation
- FMCW Radar: The use of FMCW technology provides high accuracy and a high dynamic range, allowing for measurements up to 100 meters.
- Non-Contact Measurement: The device measures the level without touching the liquid, ensuring no contamination or damage.
- Suitable for Various Media: It is designed for measuring liquids, pastes, and slurries in challenging chemical, petrochemical, and oil and gas applications.
- Specialized Antenna Options: The OPTIWAVE 5400 C can be equipped with different antennas, such as a polypropylene drop antenna for corrosive environments, minimizing scaling and condensation effects.
