The Krohne Optiwave 6300 C uses 24 GHz FMCW radar to measure the distance to a material's surface, which is then converted to level, volume, or mass. It generates a continuously sweeping radar wave that reflects off the product, and the device measures the time-of-flight or the frequency difference of the reflected signal to calculate the distance. This non-contact method is ideal for dusty environments and challenging solid material measurements.

Working Principle

  1. Radar Wave Transmission: The device emits a continuously sweeping microwave signal (FMCW - Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave) from its antenna.
  2. Reflection: This radar wave travels to the material's surface in the tank or silo and reflects back to the antenna.
  3. Signal Analysis: The device compares the frequency of the emitted wave with the frequency of the received, reflected wave.
  4. Distance Calculation: The difference in frequency is directly proportional to the distance of the material's surface from the antenna.
  5. Level Determination: The distance is then converted into a level measurement.
  6. Output: The calculated level is transmitted to a control room via a standard 4-20mA signal.
