The KROHNE OPTIFLEX 3200 uses Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR) to measure liquid level and interface in hygienic applications. It transmits electromagnetic pulses along a probe, which are reflected by the liquid surface. The device measures the time it takes for the pulse to travel to the liquid and return, using this transit time to calculate the distance to the product surface. The reflected signal's intensity varies with the liquid's dielectric constant, allowing for the measurement of the interface between different liquids.
Working Principle Steps
Pulse Transmission: The device sends low-intensity electromagnetic pulses along a guided probe.
Pulse Guidance: These pulses travel at the speed of light along the rigid or flexible conductor of the probe.
Pulse Reflection: When a pulse reaches the liquid's surface, it is reflected back. The intensity of the reflection depends on the liquid's dielectric constant. A high dielectric constant, like water's, results in a stronger reflection.
Time Measurement: The device measures the time elapsed from when the pulse is transmitted to when the reflected pulse is received.
Distance Calculation: Half of this transit time is equivalent to the distance from the device's probe to the liquid's surface.
Level Conversion: This measured time value is then converted into a current output, such as a 4…20 mA signal, representing the liquid's level.
