ABB Positioner TZIDC Series - V18345-2020120001

The TZIDC positioner uses an electronic controller with a PI or PID algorithm to compare the desired valve position (setpoint) with the actual position. It then adjusts the pneumatic air pressure to a control valve using an I/P module and a 3/3-way valve, which modifies the flow to the actuator until the setpoint is reached. The positioner also features an auto-adjustment function that automatically determines control parameters for optimal performance.

Working principle

1. Control loop: The positioner takes an electrical command signal and a feedback signal from a position sensor, comparing them to determine the required actuator position.
2. I/P conversion: An electronic-to-pneumatic (I/P) module converts the electrical control signal into a pneumatic signal.
3. Pneumatic control: This pneumatic signal is then sent to a 3/3-way valve, which directs compressed air to either the "out" port for a single-acting actuator or "out 1" and "out 2" for a double-acting actuator.
4. Actuator adjustment: The I/P module continuously adjusts the air pressure to move the actuator to the correct position, ensuring the valve is set correctly to meet the process requirements.
5. Automatic calibration: The system has an automatic adjustment function that opens and closes the valve several times to fine-tune the control parameters for optimal behavior, which saves time and improves performance.
6. Setpoint reached: When the valve reaches its setpoint, the 3/3-way valve is closed in a center position to minimize air consumption.
7. Fail-safe function: If the electrical power is lost, the "fail-safe" function vents the actuator, and the return spring pushes the valve to a predetermined safe position.
