ABB Positioner TZIDC-200 Series - V18348-20113200110

The ABB Positioner TZIDC-200 works by converting an electrical input signal into a pneumatic output to precisely control an actuator. It uses an I/P (current-to-pressure) module to translate the electrical signal into a proportional pneumatic signal, which then controls a 3/3-way valve. This valve is used to either pressurize or depressurize the actuator, with a digital controller (using PI/PID logic) ensuring the actuator's position accurately matches the setpoint by continuously adjusting the air flow. When the setpoint is reached, the valve moves to a center position to minimize air consumption.

Step-by-step working principle:

  • Signal reception: The positioner receives an electrical input signal, typically a 4-20 mA signal, representing the desired position.
  • Signal conversion: An internal I/P (current-to-pressure) module converts the electrical signal into a proportional pneumatic signal.
  • Position control: A digital controller uses this pneumatic signal to manage a 3/3-way control valve.
  • Actuator adjustment: The valve directs compressed air to either pressurize or depressurize the pneumatic actuator, causing it to move. The controller continuously monitors the actuator's position and adjusts the air flow to ensure it moves to the commanded position.
  • Set-point achievement: Once the actuator reaches the correct position, the 3/3-way valve is moved to a closed, center position, which holds the actuator in place and stops the air flow to conserve energy.
  • Feedback: The positioner continuously monitors the actuator's position to make any necessary adjustments, ensuring a precise and stable control.

Core components and closed-loop control

The working principle of the TZIDC-200 is based on a closed-loop control system that continuously compares the desired position with the actual valve position.

  • Set-point signal input (4–20 mA): The positioner receives a 4–20 mA DC electrical signal from a control system (such as a Distributed Control System or Programmable Logic Controller). This signal represents the desired valve position, with 4 mA corresponding to 0% travel and 20 mA to 100% travel.
  • I/P converter: A key internal component, the I/P module, converts the electrical set-point signal into a proportional pneumatic signal. This signal is used to operate a 3/3-way air valve.
  • Position sensing and feedback: The TZIDC-200 is mechanically linked to the valve's stem or shaft. A sensor within the positioner detects the actuator's actual position (its angle for a rotary actuator or its linear travel for a linear one).
  • Position sensing and feedback: The TZIDC-200 is mechanically linked to the valve's stem or shaft. A sensor within the positioner detects the actuator's actual position (its angle for a rotary actuator or its linear travel for a linear one).
  • Microprocessor and comparison: The internal microprocessor continuously compares the set-point signal from the control system with the feedback signal from the position sensor. If there is a difference (a control deviation), the microprocessor executes its control algorithm.
  • Pneumatic output adjustment: Based on the calculation, the microprocessor adjusts the pneumatic output signal to the 3/3-way air valve. This valve controls the air flow for either pressurizing or depressurizing the pneumatic actuator.
  • Actuator movement: The increase or decrease in air pressure causes the actuator to move the valve stem to the new, corrected position. This process repeats continuously, ensuring the valve is always at the desired position.
  • Air consumption optimization: To conserve compressed air, the 3/3-way valve closes in its center position once the valve reaches the set-point, stopping all air flow.

Smart and adaptive features

Beyond the basic control loop, the TZIDC-200's digital design offers advanced functionality:

  • Automatic commissioning ("Autoadjust"): By pressing a single button, the positioner can automatically adjust its control parameters and adapt to the specific actuator and valve, saving significant setup time.
  • HART communication: The positioner uses the HART protocol to provide two-way communication over the 4–20 mA signal. This allows for remote configuration, calibration, and diagnostics via a handheld communicator or a central control system.
  • Continuous diagnostics: The microprocessor continuously monitors operational conditions and can provide diagnostic data and fault messages. It detects and signals issues such as signal loss, position deviations, and excessive travel time.
  • Adaptive control: The positioner can automatically and dynamically adjust its control parameters during operation to optimize performance based on real-time conditions.
  • Fail-safe/Fail-freeze functions: The positioner can be configured with specific safety functions. The "Fail-safe" function moves the valve to a predefined safe position upon power or air failure, while "Fail-freeze" locks the valve in its last position if power is lost.
