Flowserve Positioner PMV D3 Series - D3XNU-D23PVA-Z5SX
The PMV D3 Series works as a digital positioner that uses a computer-optimized pneumatic relay with piezo-electric valves to control linear or rotary actuators. It receives a 4-20 mA input signal, which it converts to a position for the actuator, while its digital system uses internal electronics to control air pressure to achieve the desired valve position with minimal air consumption.

Core working principle
- Input and processing: The positioner receives a 4-20 mA input signal, and a digital controller interprets this signal to determine the desired valve position.
- Pneumatic control: The digital controller sends precise signals to piezo-electric valves within the pneumatic relay.
- Actuator movement: The pneumatic relay then directs compressed air to either open or close the actuator to match the desired position. This includes controlling single-acting (spring return) or double-acting (air-to-open and air-to-close) actuators.
- Feedback: The positioner uses position feedback (often a 4-20 mA signal) to confirm the actuator's actual position and make any necessary adjustments to ensure it matches the input command.
- Low consumption: The "zero-bleed" pneumatic relay significantly reduces steady-state air consumption, leading to energy and cost savings.
Key features and functionality
- User interface: A large graphic display and five buttons allow for easy operation, configuration, and status monitoring without cryptic codes.
- Communication: It can communicate with a control system using protocols like HART, Profibus PA, or Foundation Fieldbus.
- Optional modules: Users can add modules for features like mechanical or proximity limit switches, mechanical feedback, and alarm functions.
- Diagnostics: Optional pressure sensors and ValveSight software can provide advanced diagnostics, allowing for proactive maintenance.
The D3's working principle
- Digital input signal: The positioner receives a standard 4–20 mA input signal from a control system, such as a Distributed Control System (DCS). This signal represents the desired valve position (e.g., 4 mA = 0% open, 20 mA = 100% open).
- Electronic control and comparison: The D3's internal electronics convert the analog input signal into a digital setpoint. A sophisticated internal algorithm continuously compares this digital setpoint to a feedback signal, which represents the actuator's actual position.
- Piezoelectric control valves: Based on the comparison, the microprocessor drives an advanced pneumatic relay that uses piezoelectric valves.
- If the actual position is below the setpoint, the electronics command the valves to increase air pressure to the actuator.
- If the actual position is above the setpoint, the valves vent air from the actuator.
- Low air consumption: The piezoelectric valves only consume air when the valve is in motion and are "zero-bleed" during steady-state operation. This significantly reduces air consumption and operating costs.
- Actuator movement: The change in air pressure causes the actuator to move, which in turn moves the attached valve.
- Position feedback: The positioner's split-spindle design is connected to a friction coupling that measures the actuator's rotation or linear travel. This provides the feedback signal to complete the control loop.
- Auto-calibration: During setup, the D3 can automatically calibrate itself. By running a procedure and selecting the actuator type, the device will find the end stops and optimize its control parameters for the best performance.
Features and benefits of the D3 series
- Adaptable design: Can be used on both linear and rotary actuators in single- or double-acting configurations.
User interface: Features a local graphic display and five pushbuttons for simple, on-site configuration and status monitoring.
