How it works

  • Receives a signal: The positioner receives an electrical input signal, typically between 4 and 20 mA, from a control system.
  • Interprets the signal: It interprets this signal as a command for a specific valve position (e.g., 4 mA might be fully closed, and 20 mA might be fully open). Controls the valve: It uses this information to control the flow of pneumatic air to the valve actuator.
  • Uses feedback: A feedback signal, generated from the valve's actual position, is continuously sent back to the positioner.
  • Adjusts position: The positioner compares the feedback signal to the original command signal and makes precise adjustments to the air supply to the actuator, moving the valve until the feedback signal matches the command.

The core working principle

  1. Input signal and microprocessor: A controller sends a 4–20 mA electrical signal to the YT-2600. This signal represents the desired valve position. A built-in microprocessor receives this signal and processes it to optimize performance.
  2. I/P conversion: The YT-2600's I/P (current-to-pressure) converter uses a piezo-electric actuator to convert the 4–20 mA electrical input into a corresponding pneumatic output pressure.
  3. Pressure output and valve movement: The resulting pneumatic pressure is sent to the valve's actuator, causing the valve stem to move. The amount of pressure dictates the extent of the movement.
  4. Position feedback and adjustment: As the valve stem moves, a feedback lever or cam attached to it rotates and communicates the valve's actual position back to the positioner's microprocessor. The microprocessor compares the actual position to the desired position from the input signal.
  5. Closed-loop control: If there is a discrepancy, the microprocessor uses proportional-derivative (PD) control to make a precise adjustment. It varies the pneumatic pressure to the actuator until the feedback from the valve matches the input signal from the controller, completing the control loop.

Key features enhancing operation

  • Auto-calibration: The YT-2600 can automatically calibrate its zero and span parameters, simplifying setup.
  • HART communication: With HART protocol, the positioner can send diagnostic information and position feedback digitally over the same 4–20 mA current loop, enabling remote monitoring.
  • Fail-safe and fail-freeze functions: In the event of a power or air supply failure, the unit can be configured to either hold the last valve position (fail-freeze) or move to a preset safe position (fail-safe).
  • PID control: The built-in microprocessor uses advanced PID (proportional-integral-derivative) control to ensure high accuracy and stability.
  • Low air consumption: The positioner is designed for high efficiency with minimal air leakage, which reduces operating costs.
