MTL Barries - MTL5541 - MTL5541/S REPEATER POWER SUPPLY

The MTL5541 is a repeater power supply that works by providing a fully isolated DC power supply to a 2- or 3-wire 4-20 mA transmitter in a hazardous area, and then repeating the current signal to a load in a safe area. For smart transmitters, it also allows for bidirectional communication signals to be superimposed on the 4-20 mA signal. This ensures that the signal is accurately replicated while preventing sparks from traveling from the safe area to the hazardous one.

Difference between MTL MTL5541 and MTL5541S

The main difference is that the MTL5541 is a standard repeater power supply that drives a load in the safe area, while the MTL5541S is a current sink that controls the current from a safe-area power source. The MTL5541 acts as a power source for the loop, while the MTL5541S is designed to be supplied by the logic solver, which then controls the current through the loop.

Feature MTL5541 MTL5541S
Function Repeater power supply, outputs a current to drive a safe-area load Current sink, controls the current from a safe-area load
Power Flow Provides power from the safe area to the hazardous area transmitter Sinks current from a safe-area power source
Load Drives a safe-area load Acts as a sink for a safe-area connection

Key principles

  • Isolation: The MTL5541 provides galvanic isolation between the hazardous and safe areas, which is a key safety feature. This prevents a fault in the safe area from causing a spark in the hazardous area.
  • Power supply: It acts as a power source for the transmitter in the hazardous area, which typically uses a 2- or 3-wire conventional loop.
  • Current repetition: The device takes the \(4-20\) mA current signal from the transmitter and repeats it to drive the load in the safe area.
  • HART communication: For smart transmitters, it supports the transmission of digital communication signals (like HART) superimposed on the 4-20 mA signal
  • .Line fault detection: It includes a line fault detection (LFD) facility that detects open or short circuits in the loop and repeats the fault information to the safe-area control system.

The MTL5541 is a single-channel, intrinsically safe repeater power supply (galvanic isolator) designed to safely transfer 4–20mA analog signals between a hazardous area and a safe area.

Working Principle

The core working principle of the MTL5541 is galvanic isolation. This means there is no direct electrical connection between the circuits in the hazardous area and those in the safe area.

  1. Powering the Field Device (Hazardous Area): The unit, powered by a 20–35V DC supply in the safe area, provides a fully floating DC power supply to energize a 2-wire or 3-wire 4–20mA transmitter located in the hazardous area. This power is current-limited to ensure intrinsic safety, meaning it cannot release enough energy (electrical or thermal) to ignite an explosive atmosphere.
  2. Signal Transmission: The 4–20mA current signal generated by the transmitter in the hazardous area is received by the MTL5541.
  3. Isolation and Repetition: Internal circuitry within the MTL5541 galvanically isolates the input signal from the output signal and the power supply. The module then precisely "repeats" or mirrors this current in a separate, isolated circuit in the safe area.
  4. Safe Area Output: This repeated current (4–20mA) drives a load (e.g., a control system input, PLC, or indicator) in the safe area.

Key Functions and Features

  • Intrinsic Safety (IS): The primary function is to create an intrinsically safe barrier, preventing high energy from the safe area from entering the hazardous area and causing an explosion.
Signal Conversion/Conditioning: It converts a hazardous-area signal into an isolated, proportional safe-area signal.
HART Communication Support: The standard MTL5541 allows bi-directional digital communication signals (HART data) to be superimposed on the 4–20mA loop current, enabling smart transmitter interrogation from the control room.
Line Fault Detection (LFD): The unit can detect open or short circuits in the hazardous-area wiring and repeat this fault condition to the safe-area control system.
Isolation: Total AC and DC isolation between the input, output, and power supply circuits eliminates earth loop problems and simplifies installation by not requiring a dedicated high-integrity earth connection, unlike Zener barriers.
DIN-Rail Mounting: Designed for easy installation and maintenance on a standard DIN rail using plug-in connectors.
