MTL Barries - MTL5531 VIBRATION TRANSDUCER INTERFACE

The MTL5531 is a vibration transducer interface that translates a signal from a vibration sensor in a hazardous area into a signal that can be used by a monitoring system in a safe area. It works by repeating the signal from the transducer, compatible with 3-wire eddy-current probes and accelerometers or 2-wire current sensors, to the safe area. It provides isolation between the hazardous and safe area circuits for safety and accuracy.

Working principle

  • Signal from hazardous area: A vibration transducer (like an eddy-current probe, accelerometer, or 2-wire current sensor) is located in a hazardous area and generates a signal based on vibration.
  • Signal repetition and isolation: The MTL5531 interface receives this signal from the hazardous area. It is designed to isolate the hazardous and safe area circuits to prevent earth loops and ensure safety.
  • Signal output to safe area: The interface then repeats and outputs a corresponding signal to a monitoring system in a separate, safe area. This output is a clean, reliable signal for analysis.

Key features

  • Compatibility: Works with 3-wire eddy-current probes and accelerometers, as well as 2-wire current sensors.
  • Isolation: Provides electrical isolation between the hazardous area and the safe area for safety and to eliminate ground loops.
  • Accuracy: Offers high accuracy and a wide bandwidth for reliable signal transmission.
Installation: Can be mounted on a DIN rail for simplified installation.
  • Power: It has a 20 to 35 VDC supply requirement.

The MTL5531 is a vibration transducer interface that acts as an intrinsically safe galvanic isolator. Its primary working principle is to safely repeat a signal from a vibration sensor located in a hazardous area to a monitoring system in a safe area, preventing the transfer of dangerous energy into the hazardous zone.

Working principle

The module uses galvanic isolation to create an energy limited barrier between the hazardous area and the safe area.

  • Signal Input (Hazardous Area): A 2-wire or 3-wire vibration sensor (such as an eddy-current probe or accelerometer) is connected to the MTL5531 in the hazardous zone. The module provides a restricted power supply to this sensor and receives the raw signal (typically a voltage range like -20V to -0.5V).
  • Isolation Barrier: The MTL5531 employs internal circuitry, including transformers and possibly opto-isolators, to transfer the signal across a safety barrier without any direct electrical connection. This ensures that no excess voltage or current from the safe area power supply can reach the hazardous area, thus preventing ignition in potentially explosive atmospheres.
  • Signal Output (Safe Area): In the safe area, the module provides a buffered, isolated, and identical signal output for connection to monitoring equipment, a PLC (Programmable Logic Controller), or a DCS (Distributed Control System). The output is typically a standard industrial signal, like a voltage or current loop.
  • Configuration: A switch on the side of the module allows the user to select compatibility for either 2-wire current sensors or 3-wire probes/accelerometers.

The green LED on the unit indicates the power status. This device is assessed for use in functional safety applications up to SIL 2 applications when used in a redundant configuration.
