MTL Barries - MTL5532 PULSE ISOLATOR (pulse & 4/20mA current outputs)

The MTL5532 is a pulse isolator that transfers signals from a hazardous area to a safe area by creating an isolated, repeating pulse signal or a proportional 4–20 mA analog output. It works by receiving a pulse or analog signal from a switch, proximity detector, or pulse transmitter in a hazardous area and then recreating that signal in the safe area after passing it through a galvanic isolation barrier. This process ensures safety by preventing energy from the hazardous area from reaching the safe area, and it also prevents ground loops and electrical noise from interfering with the signal.

Working principle

  • Signal Input: The device accepts input from a sensor in a hazardous area, such as a switch, a NAMUR proximity detector, or a 2- or 3-wire voltage/pulse transmitter.
  • Galvanic Isolation: The incoming signal is passed through an isolating barrier, which provides a high level of electrical separation between the hazardous and safe areas. This isolation is crucial for safety and prevents ground loops.
  • Signal Conditioning: The isolator conditions the signal to be compatible with the safe-area control system.
  • Pulse Output: The MTL5532 repeats the input pulse signal into the safe area, allowing for high-frequency pulses (up to 50 kHz).
  • Analog Output: It can also provide a 4–20 mA analog output signal that is proportional to the input frequency or signal.
  • Alarm Output: A relay output can be configured as an alarm that triggers if an alarm condition is met.
  • Configuration: The device is configured using a personal computer with a dedicated software package, which allows for customization of the output and alarm functions.

The MTL5532 is a pulse isolator designed to safely transfer signals between a hazardous area (where potentially explosive atmospheres might be present) and a safe area (control room, etc.). Its core working principle relies on galvanic isolation to ensure intrinsic safety.

Working Principle

The primary function of the MTL5532 is electrical isolation, which it achieves through internal isolating components (likely transformers or optical isolators).

  1. Signal Input (Hazardous Area): The device receives a pulse signal from a sensor located in the hazardous area, such as a switch, a proximity detector (NAMUR type), or a voltage/current pulse transmitter. The circuitry connected to the hazardous area is designed to be "intrinsically safe," meaning it limits the electrical energy (voltage and current) to levels that cannot cause a spark hot enough to ignite a flammable atmosphere.
  2. Isolation: The input signal is processed and then coupled across a safety isolation barrier. This barrier provides a high degree of electrical separation, preventing dangerous voltages or surges from the safe area (e.g., a 24V DC power supply or control system) from reaching the hazardous area. This eliminates potential ground loop problems and protects connected equipment from electrical noise and transients.
  3. Signal Output (Safe Area): On the safe-area side of the barrier, the original pulse signal is regenerated (repeated). The unit provides several output options:
  • Pulse Output: The isolated pulses are repeated directly into the safe area for high-speed counting applications (up to 50kHz).
  • Analog Output: The frequency of the input pulses is converted into a proportional 4–20mA analog current signal.
  • Relay Output: A configurable relay output can be used to act as an alarm signal based on specific input conditions.

Key Features Contributing to its Operation

  • Intrinsic Safety: The device is certified for use in Zone 0, 1, and 2 hazardous areas, adhering to standards like IEC 61508 for functional safety.
  • Signal Conversion: It acts as a converter, accepting various input types (switch, proximity, voltage/current pulses) and providing both digital and analog outputs.
  • PC Configuration: The behavior and alarm setpoints of the unit are configured via a personal computer using specific software (e.g., MTL PCS45).
  • DIN Rail Mounting: The unit is designed for easy and secure installation in industrial control cabinets using a standard 35mm DIN rail.

In essence, the MTL5532 acts as a robust, safe bridge for critical process signals, ensuring data integrity while maintaining strict compliance with industrial safety standards for hazardous environments.
