MTL Barries - MTL4513 -  SWITCH/ PROXIMITY DETECTOR INTERFACE

The MTL4513 is an intrinsic safety barrier that acts as a galvanic isolator, allowing two switches or proximity detectors in a hazardous area to control two solid-state outputs in a safe area. Its working principle is based on isolating the hazardous and safe areas and providing two independently controlled, solid-state outputs. It features a common terminal for the output transistors, allows for switching positive or negative polarity signals, and has independent line fault detection for each output.

  • Isolation: The device uses galvanic isolation to separate the hazardous area circuits from the safe area circuits. This is achieved without needing a high-integrity earth connection for the hazardous area, preventing earth loops and simplifying installation.
  • Two Channels: It provides two independent channels, each with a solid-state output and a separate input for a switch or proximity detector located in a hazardous area.
  • Independent Control: Each output can be configured to switch either a positive or negative polarity signal.

The MTL4513 is a two-channel

intrinsically safe (IS) galvanic isolator that acts as an interface between devices in a hazardous area and a control system in a safe area.

Its working principle is based on:
  • Intrinsic Safety: The module limits the amount of electrical energy (voltage and current) that can pass from the safe area to the hazardous area to a level incapable of igniting flammable gases or dusts, even under fault conditions (e.g., short circuits). This allows for safe operation and live maintenance of field equipment within the hazardous zone.
  • Signal Transmission: The device enables two solid-state outputs in the safe area to be controlled by two switches or proximity detectors located in the hazardous area. It uses advanced circuitry and isolating transformers to achieve this signal transfer while maintaining galvanic isolation between the two areas.
  • Galvanic Isolation: The internal isolating transformers prevent a direct metallic current path between the hazardous and safe area circuits, which simplifies installation by avoiding earth-loop problems and removing the need for a high-integrity earth connection required by zener barriers.
  • Input Compatibility: It is designed to work with inputs that conform to the standards for proximity detectors (e.g., BS EN60947–5–6:2001).
  • Line Fault Detection (LFD): The module includes user-selectable line fault detection via switches for each output. It can detect open or short circuit conditions in the field wiring and provide an indication (often a flashing LED).
  • Output Control: The outputs are solid-state transistors that share a common terminal and can switch positive or negative polarity signals. Independent output phase reversal is also user-selectable for each channel via a switch on the module.

In essence, the MTL4513 translates simple electrical signals (on/off from a switch or proximity sensor) across an isolation barrier, ensuring that no potentially explosive energy reaches the hazardous environment.
