How it works

  • Control input: A switch, logic signal, or open-collector transistor in the safe area provides the primary control for the device in the hazardous area.
  • A closed switch or low voltage (less than (1.4V) energizes the output.
  • An open switch or high voltage (greater than (4.5V) de-energizes the output.
  • Output: The unit drives a load in the hazardous area, such as a solenoid valve or an alarm.
  • Override input: A second, independent input allows for a higher-level system to disable the output, regardless of the control input state.
  • A closed switch or low voltage on this input will turn the output off.
  • Intrinsic safety: The MTL4525 is designed to be intrinsically safe, meaning it limits electrical energy to prevent the ignition of a hazardous atmosphere. It does this through a 3-port isolation design and inherent safety parameters (Uo= ± 9.7V,Io =30mA,Po=0.07W,Ci=0nF,Li=0mH).Line fault detection: The unit can also detect line faults, such as open or short

Working Principle

The primary function of the MTL4525 is galvanic isolation, using an innovative isolating transformer to separate the safe-area control circuit from the hazardous-area load circuit. This technique ensures that no fault in the safe-area system can cause energy levels (voltage or current) in the hazardous area to exceed the very low, intrinsically safe limits required to ignite a flammable atmosphere.
Here is a breakdown of how it works:

  • Signal Input (Safe Area): The module accepts a standard logic signal or a volt-free contact closure from a control system (like a DCS or ESD system) located in the safe area.
  • Galvanic Isolation: The input signal modulates power across the internal isolating transformer. This isolation prevents any electrical connection between the two areas, effectively breaking potential earth-loop problems and ensuring safety.
  • Power Limiting (Hazardous Area): The output circuit to the hazardous area is designed with specific safety parameters to limit the maximum voltage (Uo), current (Io), and power (Po) to intrinsically safe levels.
  • Load Driving: The limited power is sufficient to drive low-power IS devices such as solenoids, alarms, or LEDs that are specifically certified for use in Zone 0, IIC hazardous areas.
  • Override Function: A unique feature of the MTL4525 is a second input for an "override" signal. This allows a safety system (e.g., an Emergency Shutdown System) to force the output off, regardless of the main control input state, adding an extra layer of safety. 

In essence, the MTL4525 acts as a robust, safe one-way gate for control signals, preventing hazardous energy from reaching the explosive environment while allowing necessary control signals to pass through.
