MTL Barries - MTL4541A -  CURRENT REPEATER

(4/20mA passive i/p for HART® transmitters)

The MTL4541A is an intrinsic safety isolator that acts as a 4-20mA current repeater, allowing a separately powered transmitter in a hazardous area (Zone 0/Div 1) to send its signal to a safe area control system while also enabling two-way HART communication, preventing ignition hazards through galvanic isolation and limiting energy. It repeats the 4-20mA signal into a load in the safe area, with the 'AS' variant acting as a sink, all while supporting diagnostics and configuration via HART.

Working Principle:

  1. Hazardous Area Input (Terminals 1, 2): A 4-20mA transmitter in the hazardous zone sends its signal to the MTL4541A.
  2. Intrinsic Safety: The module uses galvanic isolation (isolating transformers) to separate the hazardous area circuit from the safe area, preventing sparks by limiting voltage and current.
  3. Signal Conditioning & Repeating: The device receives the 4-20mA signal and repeats it, providing power to the transmitter (MTLx541A) or acting as a current sink (MTLx541AS) for a safe-area load.
  4. HART Communication: It allows digital HART signals (for diagnostics/configuration) to be superimposed on the analog 4-20mA current loop, enabling communication without interrupting the primary measurement.
  5. Safe Area Output (Terminals 9, 10/11, 12): The repeated 4-20mA signal is sent to the control system (like a PLC/DCS) in the safe area, often via a backplane connector.
  6. Line Fault Detection: It detects open-circuit (o/c) or short-circuit (s/c) conditions in the hazardous-area loop and repeats this fault status to the safe-area system via LEDs or the control loop itself.

Key Features Summary

The MTL4541A is a single-channel current repeater and intrinsic safety (IS) isolator that interfaces a 4/20mA process transmitter located in a hazardous area with a monitoring system (e.g., DCS or PLC) in a safe area.
Its working principle revolves around two main functions:

  1. Signal Transmission and Isolation:

The module receives a 4/20mA signal from a separately powered transmitter in the hazardous area and mirrors, or "repeats," that current signal to a load in the safe area. The core principle involves galvanic isolation (or "3-port isolation") which uses isolating transformers to provide an electrical separation between the hazardous-area circuits and the safe-area circuits, as well as the power supply.
This isolation is crucial for safety:

  • It prevents high or unsafe voltages from the safe area from reaching the hazardous area, thereby ensuring intrinsic safety and preventing potential explosions in volatile environments.
  • It eliminates earth loop problems, simplifying installation and earthing requirements.
  1. Bi-directional HART Communication

A key feature of the MTL4541A is its ability to allow the bi-directional transmission of HART (Highway Addressable Remote Transducer) communication signals. These digital signals are superimposed on the analog 4/20mA loop current. This enables personnel in the safe area to use a handheld communicator (HHC) or control system to remotely interrogate, configure, or calibrate the field transmitter located in the hazardous area, without compromising the safety isolation.

Summary of Operation

In essence, the MTL4541A acts as a secure, transparent bridge for both analog measurement signals and digital configuration data between two electrically isolated areas. The module has no configuration switches itself, operating purely as an interface.
