MTL Barries - MTL4576 -  TEMPERATURE CONVERTER

(RTD/potentiometer input, 2-channel)

The MTL4576 is an intrinsically safe, two-channel temperature converter that takes low-level signals from sensors (like thermocouples or RTDs) in hazardous areas, performs signal conditioning (linearization, ranging) using PC software, and outputs a standard 4-20mA current to drive devices in safe areas, ensuring isolation and preventing explosions. Its core principle involves converting non-standard sensor signals into a robust, standardized current loop for reliable process control in explosive environments.

Working Principle Breakdown:

  1. Hazardous Area Input: The device accepts low-level DC signals from temperature sensors (like thermocouples (THC) or Resistance Temperature Detectors (RTDs)) located in explosive zones (Zone 0, 1, 2).
  2. Intrinsic Safety: It uses MTL's intrinsic safety technology (similar to Zener barriers/isolators) to limit energy, preventing sparks that could ignite flammable gases or dust, as per safety standards.
  3. Signal Processing (Internal):
  1. Cold-Junction Compensation (for Thermocouples): Automatically compensates for temperature variations at the sensor's connection point.
  2. Linearization & Ranging: Converts the sensor's non-linear voltage/resistance into a true temperature value and scales it.
  3. PC Configuration: A PC running specific MTL software (e.g., PCS45) is used to select input types (J, K, T, RTD types), set range, and enable diagnostics.
  1. Output: It outputs a standardized 4-20mA current signal, which is proportional to the measured temperature.
  2. Safe Area Output: This 4-20mA signal drives control system inputs (DCS, PLC) or other safe-area loads, providing reliable process monitoring without compromising safety.
  3. Isolation: Provides galvanic isolation between hazardous and safe areas, eliminating earth loops and simplifying installation.

In essence, the MTL4576 acts as a bridge, safely converting raw temperature data from dangerous areas into usable, isolated signals for control rooms, all while adhering to strict explosion protection standards.

The MTL4576 is an intrinsically safe temperature converter that acts as an isolating interface between temperature sensors in a hazardous area and a control system in a safe area
. Its primary function is signal conditioning and galvanic isolation to ensure safety in potentially explosive environments.
There are two main versions of the MTL4576, with slightly different working principles based on the input type:

MTL4576-THC (Thermocouple Converter)

This model converts low-level DC signals from various types of thermocouples (J, K, T, E, R, S, B, or N) or mV sources located in a hazardous area into a standard 4–20mA current signal for use by safe-area equipment.

Working Principle

  1. Signal Acquisition: It receives low-voltage signals from thermocouples.
  2. Cold-Junction Compensation (CJC): The module automatically compensates for the temperature at the terminal connections (cold junction) to ensure accurate temperature measurement.
  3. Signal Processing: The input signal is amplified and processed. Software-selectable features like linearization and ranging are applied using a connected computer running MTL PCS45 software.
  4. Isolation & Output: The processed signal is converted into an isolated 4–20mA output current, which drives the safe-area load, while maintaining functional isolation between the hazardous and safe-area circuits.

MTL4576-RTD (RTD Converter)

This model converts signals from Resistance Temperature Detectors (RTDs), compatible with 2- and 3-wire inputs, into a 4–20mA current for safe-area loads. It can also drive two safe-area loads from a single input.

Working Principle

  • Signal Acquisition: It measures the resistance of the RTD sensor in the hazardous area.
  • Signal Processing: The resistance reading is converted to a temperature value. Similar to the THC version, configuration (input type, characterization, ranging) is performed via PC software.
  • Isolation & Output: The unit converts the temperature data into an isolated 4–20mA signal to the control system, ensuring intrinsic safety through galvanic isolation.

Core Intrinsic Safety Principle

The fundamental working principle of the MTL4576, like all MTL isolators, is intrinsic safety. It limits the electrical energy (voltage and current) that can enter the hazardous area under both normal and fault conditions to a level insufficient to ignite an explosive atmosphere (gas or dust).
This isolation technique eliminates the need for high-integrity earthing required by zener barriers and prevents earth-loop problems in installation.
