MTL Barries - MTL5513 -  SWITCH/ PROXIMITY DETECTOR INTERFACE

(2-channel, line fault detection, phase reversal)

The MTL5513 is a two-channel intrinsic safety (IS) isolator that bridges hazardous and safe areas, allowing switches or proximity detectors in dangerous zones to control solid-state outputs (like PLCs/DCS inputs) in the safe area, preventing explosions by limiting energy; it uses galvanic isolation, supports Line Fault Detection (LFD), and offers configuration switches for polarity and fault indication, simplifying installation with DIN-rail mounting and plug-in connecto

Key Working Principle

  • Intrinsic Safety & Galvanic Isolation: The core principle is preventing explosions by limiting electrical energy in the hazardous area. The MTL5513 uses galvanic isolation, meaning there's no direct electrical connection between the hazardous (Zone 0, 1, 2) and safe (control room) circuits, preventing sparks and earth loops.
  • Input (Hazardous Area): It accepts signals from simple switches (mechanical or NAMUR proximity sensors) in the hazardous zone.
  • Signal Processing: When the switch closes in the hazardous area, it changes the input current/resistance.
  • Output (Safe Area): The unit's internal circuitry detects this change and drives two corresponding solid-state outputs (transistors) in the safe area, often mimicking the input's ON/OFF state or inverting it as configured.
  • Energy Limitation: The module ensures that the voltage and current delivered to the hazardous area inputs never exceed safe limits (e.g., Uo =10.5V, Io =14mA), protecting against ignition.
  • Line Fault Detection (LFD): Switches on the module allow for LFD, which detects open circuits (o/c) or short circuits (s/c) in the field wiring, indicating a fault to the control system via a status LED and output signal.
  • Installation: It mounts on a DIN rail, with plug-in connectors for power and signals, making installation and maintenance much simpler than traditional Zener barriers.

In Simple Terms

Think of it as a safety translator: it reads the simple ON/OFF signals from a switch in a dangerous place, translates them into safe electrical signals, and sends them to your control system in the safe zone, while also warning you if the switch's wiring gets damaged

The MTL5513 is a two-channel switch/proximity detector interface that operates on the principle of galvanic intrinsic safety isolation. Its core function is to allow electrical signals from a hazardous area to control equipment in a safe area without transferring enough energy to ignite an explosive atmosphere.

Working Principle
The module achieves safety and signal transfer through the following mechanisms:
  • Intrinsic Safety (IS) Isolation: The primary principle is galvanic isolation, typically using internal isolating transformers. This separation ensures that high voltages or excessive currents in the safe area cannot reach the hazardous area, even in the event of a fault.
  • Signal Transfer: The interface enables two switches or proximity detectors located in the hazardous area to control two independent solid-state outputs in the safe area.
  • Signal Conversion: The state of the hazardous-area input (e.g., a switch opening or closing) is detected by the module, which then activates the corresponding solid-state transistor output in the safe area.
  • Powering the Sensor: The module supplies the necessary power (Uo=10.5V, Io=14mA, Po=37mW) to the hazardous-area switches or proximity detectors while strictly limiting the available energy to intrinsically safe levels.
  • Line Fault Detection (LFD): The device continuously monitors the wiring to the hazardous area for open-circuit or short-circuit faults. If a fault is detected, it is indicated by a red LED on the top of the module, and the information can be relayed to the control system.
  • User Configuration: Independent switches allow the user to select the output phase (normal or reversed) for each channel to meet specific application requirements.

Key Functions

  • Input: Accepts signals from two independent switches or NAMUR proximity detectors in a hazardous area.
  • Output: Provides two floating solid-state outputs in the safe area, compatible with logic circuits, capable of switching positive or negative polarity signals.
  • Hazardous Area Certification: Designed and certified for use in functional safety applications, preventing explosions in gas and dust atmospheres by restricting energy.
