MTL Barries - MTL5501SR - FAIL-SAFE SWITCH/PROXIMITYDETECTOR INTERFACE
(with LFD)
The MTL5501-SR is a SIL3-rated intrinsic safety isolator that uses a fail-safe switch or proximity detector in a hazardous area to control an isolated, fail-safe electronic output in the safe area, providing galvanic isolation and preventing explosions by limiting energy; it also includes Line Fault Detection (LFD) for open/short circuits, signaling issues via relay contacts, enabling safe, live maintenance in dangerous zones, and mounts on standard DIN rails.

Working principle
- Hazardous Area Input (Sensor Side):
- An approved fail-safe switch or proximity detector (like a 2-wire sensor) is located in the hazardous zone (Zone 0/1).
- The device connects to terminals 1 & 2 on the MTL5501-SR.
- The module applies a limited voltage (e.g., 8.6V max) to this sensor loop.
- Intrinsic Safety & Isolation:
- The MTL5501-SR acts as a zener barrier/isolator, ensuring the energy (voltage & current) in the hazardous area loop is always below ignition levels (e.g., Uo= ± 9.7V, Io =30mA,Po =0.07W).
- This prevents sparks or heat from igniting flammable gases, allowing live work without gas clearance.
- Signal Conversion & Output:
- When the sensor changes state (switch opens/closes, object detected), it alters the current/voltage in the hazardous area loop.
- The isolator senses this change and translates it into a corresponding isolated, fail-safe output signal in the safe area.
- Line Fault Detection (LFD):
- The unit monitors the hazardous area loop for open circuits (broken wires) or short circuits.
- If a fault occurs (e.g., current drops below 50µA for open, or detected as short), relay alarm contacts are activated, signaling the fault to the control system.
- Fail-Safe Operation:
- The output is designed to go to a predetermined safe state (e.g., de-energized) if a fault occurs, contributing to the overall Safety Integrity Level (SIL3) of the system.

The MTL 5501-SR is a single-channel, fail-safe intrinsic safety isolator designed to interface a switch or proximity detector in a hazardous area with a control system (e.g., PLC) in a safe area. Its primary working principle revolves around providing galvanic isolation and converting the input signal into a safe-area output, while also monitoring for line faults.
Working Principle
The module operates based on monitoring current levels in the sensor circuit located in the hazardous area.
- Intrinsic Safety (IS) Barrier: The core principle is intrinsic safety, a protection technique that limits the electrical energy (voltage and current) in the hazardous area circuit to a level below what is required to ignite a flammable atmosphere. The MTL 5501-SR achieves this using advanced circuit design and isolating transformers.
- Signal Conversion: The module applies a low voltage (around 8.6V dc max) to the field sensor via terminals 1 and 2, which determines a specific current flow based on the sensor's state (ON/OFF).
- Input/Output Characteristics:
- Sensor ON (Normal Operation): When the switch/detector is activated (current Is is between 2.9mA and 3.9mA), the unit's internal circuitry detects this current and switches the safe-area electronic output ON (nominally 24V).
- Sensor OFF (Normal Operation): When the switch/detector is deactivated (current Is is below 1.9mA or above 5.1mA), the output in the safe area is OFF (max < 5V dc).
- Galvanic Isolation: The module provides isolation between the hazardous-area, safe-area, and power-supply terminals, preventing ground-loop problems and ensuring safety integrity.
- Line Fault Detection (LFD): The device continuously monitors the sensor circuit for open or short circuit conditions by checking if the current is outside the normal operating range.
- Broken Line (Open Circuit): If Is is less than 50µA, a line fault is detected (LFD contacts open).
- Shorted Line (Short Circuit): If the resistance (Rs) is less than 100Ω, a line fault is detected (LFD contacts open).
- Fail-Safe Design: The "SR" stands for Safety Relay (or similar designation). The module is certified for use in safety instrumented systems up to SIL3 according to IEC 61508, meaning the output will go to a safe state (OFF) if a fault is detected in the input line.
Summary of Operation
The MTL 5501-SR acts as a robust, safe interface that uses specific current thresholds to reliably transmit the status of a field device to a control system while rigorously ensuring that no excessive energy can enter the hazardous area, even under fault conditions.
