MTL Barrier - MTL 707+ Protected Safety Barrier (Diode)

The MTL7707+ is a shunt-diode safety barrier that protects hazardous-area circuits by limiting energy, preventing explosions, primarily for switch inputs/outputs; its core principle involves Zener diodes shunting excess energy to earth, while an electronic fuse limits current during faults, ensuring a low-voltage, low-current safe signal for field devices like switches, all while allowing high-voltage supplies in the safe area without risk.

Working Principle Breakdown

  1. Intrinsic Safety (IS) Core: The MTL7707+ embodies intrinsic safety, limiting electrical energy (voltage & current) to levels too low to ignite explosive atmospheres (gases, dusts).
  2. Shunt-Diode Protection:
  • Normal Operation: In standard operation, the Zener diodes introduce minimal voltage drop and shunt very little current (under 1mA) to earth, allowing the signal to pass.
  • Fault Condition (Overvoltage/Low Resistance): If a high voltage (above ~27V for the MTL7707+) or a very low resistance load appears in the safe area, the Zener diodes conduct heavily.
  1. Current Limiting: This conduction shunts the excess current, and an electronic fuse automatically limits the supply current to around 50mA, protecting the barrier's fuse and the power supply, keeping the loop functional.
  2. Reverse Voltage Protection: The outgoing channel protects against reverse voltages up to 250V, while the return channel is unaffected, adding robustness.
  3. Application: It's ideal for safeguarding simple field devices like switches, controlling safe-area relays or opto-couplers from an unregulated DC supply, creating an intrinsically safe loop.

Key Features:

  • Bussed Power Feed: Can share a fused power supply with other barriers via the MTL7798 module for simpler wiring.
  • Live Maintenance: Allows for safe maintenance in hazardous areas.
  • High Packing Density: Mounts on DIN rails, saving space.

In essence, the MTL7707+ acts as a vigilant guardian, letting normal signals pass but clamping down hard on dangerous energy surges, making hazardous area operations safe and simple.

The MTL 707+ (often part of the MTL700 or MTL7700 series) is a shunt-diode safety barrier designed for intrinsic safety in hazardous environments. Its primary function is to prevent electrical energy from a "safe area" (e.g., a control room) from igniting explosive atmospheres in a "hazardous area".

Working Principle

The MTL 707+ operates on the following core principles:

  • Energy Limitation: It limits the voltage and current transferred to the hazardous area to levels below the minimum ignition energy of the surrounding gas or dust.
  • Shunt-Diode Mechanism:
  • Normal Operation: The barrier acts as a low-resistance path, allowing signals (like 4-20mA) to pass with minimal voltage drop.
  • Fault Condition: If a fault (like an overvoltage) occurs in the safe area, the internal Zener diodes begin to conduct (shunt) the excess current directly to earth (ground).
  • Fuse Protection: This shunting increases the current flowing through a series fuse; if the fault persists or exceeds a certain threshold, the fuse blows, effectively disconnecting the hazardous area from the source of the fault.
  • Electronic Overvolt Protection ("+"): The "+" designation (as in MTL7707+) typically indicates built-in electronic overvoltage protection. This allows the barrier to be used with unregulated DC supplies. If the voltage exceeds approximately 27V, it automatically limits the supply current to 50mA, protecting the internal fuse and enabling the loop to keep working without permanently blowing the fuse.
