Specialized Accessories of a circuit breaker - Working Principle

 Specialized Accessories

Circuit breaker specialized accessories, such as shunt trips, undervoltage releases, and auxiliary switches, enhance protection by enabling remote tripping, monitoring, and automated control. These accessories work by acting on the breaker's internal tripping mechanism (bimetallic strip or magnetic coil) to force an open circuit.

Key Specialized Accessories & Working Principles

  • Shunt Trip: An accessory that allows for remote tripping of the circuit breaker. When a voltage is applied to the shunt trip coil (often from a fire alarm or control system), it triggers the operating mechanism to open the contacts immediately.
  • Undervoltage Release (UVR): This accessory continuously monitors voltage. If the voltage drops below a specific threshold (usually 35-70% of rated voltage), the UVR trips the breaker, protecting sensitive equipment from low-voltage conditions.
  • Auxiliary Switch/Contact: Provides status indication (Open/Closed) to remote monitoring systems, allowing operators to know the circuit breaker's status without being physically present.
  • Alarm Switch/Signal Contact: A specialized switch that only activates when the breaker trips due to a fault, allowing for immediate identification of a fault situation.
  • Motor Operator: A device attached to the front of a molded case circuit breaker to allow remote, electrical operation (opening/closing) of the breaker mechanism.

Core Working Principle

Specialized accessories generally interact with the operating mechanism and trip unit. While the standard thermal (bimetallic strip) or magnetic (coil) elements handle overload and short circuits, accessories like shunt trips act on the same mechanical linkage to trigger a trip.
  • Thermal Protection: A bimetallic strip heats and bends under prolonged overload.
  • Magnetic Protection: A solenoid coil generates a magnetic field at high currents, pulling a plunger to trigger the latch immediately.
  • Accessory Intervention: A shunt trip sends a signal to this same latch to force a trip, regardless of the current.

Specialized accessories extend the functionality of a circuit breaker beyond its basic duty of interrupting overcurrents and short circuits
. These components allow for remote control, status monitoring, and automated safety interlocks in complex electrical systems.

Key Specialized Accessories & Working Principles

Accessory Working Principle Primary Function
Shunt Trip (MX) An electromagnetic coil that, when energized by an external voltage signal, moves a plunger to release the breaker's internal latch. Remote tripping for emergency shutdowns (e.g., via a fire alarm or emergency stop button).
Undervoltage Release (UVR) A solenoid that requires continuous power to keep the breaker closed. If the supply voltage drops below a threshold (typically 35–70%), a spring overcomes the magnetic force to trip the breaker. Fail-safe protection against brownouts; prevents equipment from restarting unexpectedly when power returns.
Auxiliary Switch A set of secondary contacts mechanically linked to the main contacts. They change state (Open/Closed) whenever the breaker operates. Provides remote indication of the breaker's status to control panels or monitoring software.
Bell Alarm Switch Similar to an auxiliary switch, but it only changes state if the breaker trips due to a fault (overload/short circuit), not manual operation. Triggers fault alarms or signals a central controller that a protection event has occurred.
Motor Operator An electric motor or spring-charging mechanism that can mechanically toggle the breaker's handle or charge its closing springs. Enables remote opening and closing of the breaker, often used in automated load-shedding or synchronization

Summary of Internal vs. External Operation

Standard circuit breaker mechanisms (thermal-magnetic) respond to internal circuit conditions. Specialized accessories like the Shunt Trip and UVR allow the breaker to respond to external commands or system-wide voltage failures.
