Neware Battery Tester - Working Principle

mettere la foto battery_test_system

Neware battery testers operate as computer-controlled, multi-channel galvanostats/potentiostats that precisely charge and discharge batteries to analyze performance metrics like capacity, cycle life, internal resistance, and voltage, often simulating real-world driving conditions. Using software (BTS), the tester controls, records, and reports data, enabling grading and safety, overcharge/discharge, and temperature, among other tests.

his video provides a first look at a Neware battery tester and its components:

Key Working Principles

  • Charge/Discharge Cycles: The tester acts as a programmable load, applying specific, user-defined current and voltage levels to evaluate battery capacity, life cycle, and degradation over time.
  • Constant Current/Voltage (CC/CV): The system charges batteries using a CC/CV method, where the battery is charged at a constant current until it reaches a target voltage, then held at that voltage until the current drops to a specified cutoff.
  • Simulation & Testing Types:
  • Data Acquisition and Control: The system, comprising a testing unit and BTS software, records data like voltage, current, capacity, and time at high frequency. It allows for advanced, automated analysis, including generating differential capacity curves for analyzing charge/discharge plateaus.
  • Safety Features: Includes programmable limits on voltage, current, and temperature to prevent overcharge and forced discharge damage.

The system supports various battery clamps (coin, pouch, cylinder) and provides comprehensive reporting for battery grading based on capacity and, internal resistance, or performance

Key Working Principles

  • Programmable Charge/Discharge Cycles: The system functions by applying controlled electrical demands to a battery. It uses specific modes like Constant Current (CC)Constant Voltage (CV), and Constant Power (CP) to charge or discharge the battery while monitoring its response.
  • Four-Wire (Kelvin) Measurement: To ensure high accuracy, Neware testers typically use a four-wire connection method. This separates the current-carrying wires from the voltage-sensing wires, eliminating the effect of lead resistance and providing precise voltage readings.
  • Data Acquisition and Feedback Loops:
    • Lower-machine: Directly interacts with the battery, performing high-speed sampling (as fast as 100ms) of voltage and current.
    • Mid-machine: Acts as a buffer, calculating and organizing data before sending it to the computer.
    • Upper-machine (BTS Software): Provides the interface for users to set "cut-off" conditions (e.g., voltage limits, capacity, or time) that automatically stop a test step when reached.
  • Energy Recovery (ES Series): Some models use an Energy Saving (ES) principle, where power discharged from the battery is not wasted as heat but is instead fed back into the electrical grid or the system's internal circuit.
  • Environmental Integration: For comprehensive testing, the system can be integrated with environmental chambers to simulate extreme temperatures (from -40°C to 150°C), testing the battery's thermal stability alongside its electrical performance.

Common Measured Parameters

Through these principles, the tester calculates critical metrics for battery health:

  • apacity (Ah/Wh): The total energy a battery can deliver.
  • DCIR (DC Internal Resistance): Evaluated using pulse current to assess internal health and power capability.
  • Cycle Life: Determining how many charge/discharge cycles a battery can withstand before significant degradation.
