Brushless Excitation system of an electric motor - Working Principle

A brushless excitation system provides direct current (DC) to a synchronous motor's rotor field winding without using carbon brushes or slip rings. It uses an on-shaft AC exciter (stator field, rotating armature) and a rotating rectifier bridge to convert AC to DC, significantly reducing maintenance and enabling safer operation in hazardous environments.

• Pilot Exciter/PMG: A Permanent Magnet Generator (PMG) provides initial AC power to the AVR.
• Main Exciter (Stator/Field): Fixed coils on the stator receive DC to create a magnetic field.
• Main Exciter (Rotor/Armature): Coils on the main shaft rotate within the stator field, inducing AC.
• Rotating Rectifier (Diode Bridge): Mounted on the shaft, it converts AC from the rotor to DC.
• AVR (Automatic Voltage Regulator): Controls the stationary exciter field to manage output.

1. Initial Excitation: The controller feeds a small amount of DC to the stationary field of the main exciter (or the pilot exciter).
2. AC Generation: The main shaft turns, causing the exciter rotor to rotate within the magnetized stator field. This induces a 3-phase alternating current (AC) in the exciter rotor winding.
3. Rectification: The AC output from the exciter rotor passes directly to the rotating diode bridge (mounted on the same shaft), which rectifies it into DC.
4. Field Application: The resulting DC is fed directly to the main motor's rotor winding (field winding) to create the necessary magnetic field for rotation.
5. Control: The AVR monitors the output and adjusts the excitation current, managing the motor's power factor and speed.
