Medium, High, and Ultra-High Pressure Tubings

Introduction

Parker Autoclave Engineers offers a complete selection of austenitic, cold-drawn stainless steel tubing designed to match the performance standards of Parker Autoclave valves and fittings. Parker Autoclave Engineers medium-pressure tubing is manufactured specifically for high-pressure applications requiring both strength and corrosion resistance. The tubing is furnished randomly between 6 meters (20 feet) and 8.0 meters (26.5 feet). The average is 7.3 meters (24 feet). Medium Pressure Tuning is available in six sizes and a variety of materials.

The main concept of Autoclave Engineers always remains the same, as the operating pressure increases, the thickness of the tube increases. This is the fundamental basis for all connections. However, the diameter of the pipe must always be considered.

The following tables show exactly this.

Medium Pressure Tubing

tubing medium pressureFigure 1 - Medium Pressure Tubing

  • The medium pressure tubings it is certainly the most used in the world, it provides a great variety of connections and flows rate including also materials anti-corrosion like Inconel etc.
  • The Operating Temperatures from -423° to 1200°F (-252° to 650°C)
  • For extreme conditions of vibration and/or shock in tubing systems, such as an unsupported line near a compressor, coned-and-threaded connections exist offered anti-vibration collar gland assembly. See Figures 2 and 3 below

Figures 2 and 3 above are taken from Autoclave Engineering. This company provides Gland and internal Collar anti-vibration for all sizes of tubings called with identification KGBGLX. For more details, see Figure 4 below.

Medium Pressure Connection: Step-by-Step Assembly Instructions

 Step1  Step2 Step3
 step1  step2  step3

Insert Coned and Threaded Nipple through Gland

(Typical Elbow Fitting Assembly consisting of Fitting Body, Collar, Gland, and Coned and Threaded Nipple or Tube End.)

Thread Collar turning (Reverse Threaded to prevent rotation during torque process) onto Coned and Threaded Nipple end. For proper Collar placement, thread the Collar onto the Nipple, leaving 1-1/2 to 2 full threads exposed on Fitting side of Collar. Lubricate Gland Threads and Collar Contact surface with anti-seize compound and tube tip with process compatible lubricant (do not use metal-flake type on tube or adapter tip)
Step 4 Step 5 Medium Pressure Gland Torque
step4 step5 step6
Insert Tube/Gland assembly into Fitting body, turning clockwise approximately 4-5 threads (if unable to turn full distance by hand, look for misalignment issues with tubing and correct for proper seal). Use Torque Wrench to set (see chart in next frame) properly Cone & Thread Connections. (Available with wrench adapters in Tools and Installation brochure)

Note:

100,000 psi HP160 tubing is Autofrettaged as standard. (see Technical section: Pressure Cycling for an explanation of “Autofrettage”.

*Maximum pressure rating is based on the lowest rating of any component. Actual working pressure may be determined by tubing pressure rating, if lower.

All dimensions for reference only and subject to change. For prompt service, Parker Autoclave Engineers stocks select products. Consult your local representative.

Recommendations

  1. A line includes fittings and tubing (thicKness), which are associated with the pressure rating when building a medium, high, or ultra-high-pressure line. If a line has been determined to be high pressure, all tubing and fittings must be for high pressure. Any changes on the line, such as a medium pressure fitting or lower tube thickness, all the line will be downgraded to that lower fitting or the lower rating tube.
  2. When building a line, never mix any materials, such as stainless steel, with Inconel or other materials.
  3. Connections must be 100% secure. If a connection is unsafe, never leave it as it is; it could break at any moment, resulting in injured personnel near that connection.
  4. There are several tubing diameters around, which is very easy to confuse. The wrong diameter of the tube could be fatal. Before using the tube, always check that the diameter of the hose is correct (by calliper).
