DIN 3863 60° Cone Germany connection (Deutsche Industrial Norm)
This connection is frequently used in hydraulic systems. The DIN 60° cone male will mate with the female universal 24° or 60° cone only. The male has a 60° seat and straight metric threads. The female has a 24° and 60° universal seat and straight metric threads. The seal takes place by contact between the cone of the male and the nose of the flareless swivel. The threads hold the connection mechanically Note: The swivel female has a 24 ° / 60 ° seat
Thread Identification Table
Identification Both male and female have straight metric threads. Use a 30-degree gauge to measure seat angle as this dimension is taken from the fitting centerline. Seal The male has a 60-degree seat. The female has a 24- or 60-degree seat. The seal takes place by contact between the 60-degree seat in the male end and the respective sealing area in the female end. Comment Example: In this example the male fitting has a 60 ° flare and therefore the thread can be gas according to the BS 5200 standard, or metric according to the DIN 3863 standard. A conical thread is excluded because the thread of the fitting is clearly cylindrical. The dimension Ø = 16 , 5mm indicates a 3/8 ”GAS / BSPP fitting, but the construction tolerances could lead to consider also a 16 x 1.5 metric fitting with an external Ø of 16 mm. The check of the pitch definitely defines the thread. further test the male is screwed into a female, whose exact thread is known, and the nipple must be screwed without encountering excessive resistance CAUTION: A clumsy operator was able to screw the male thread of 1 "¼ gas into a threaded hole of 1" 5/8 in. The external diameter of 1 "¼ is 41.8 mm. With a pitch of 2.3 mm (25, 4 mm: 11); the external Ø of 1 "5/8 is 41.2 mm, with a pitch of 2.11 mm. The two threads could get confused, in some cases due to construction tolerances. The inexperienced operator feels that the first threads are coupled and then with a wrench, pulling hard, is able to screw the nipple. This drawback is due to the material of the piece which is usually aluminum. Since the nipple is made of steel, the operator tapped the internal thread, ruining the thread and bringing aluminum shavings into the circuit. This consideration wants to highlight that it is necessary to be very careful in coupling the fillets; you have to be sure of what you are doing. It is always advisable to carry out a further check or in case of doubt ask for help. NEVER use components with threads that have dents for the same reason described above.
