To become a pipeline welding inspector, you need a high school diploma. Further education through a technical school or a bachelor’s degree in engineering or architecture can make you a more desirable candidate. After working for a minimum of three years, you can take a certification exam that covers welding code applications and fundamentals. You must renew your AWS Certified Welding Inspector certification every three years. While this certification is not mandatory, employers prefer it. You must stay current on local and federal gas and water pipeline welding standards and regulations. Additional qualifications include attention to detail, excellent communication skills, and the ability to be a team player.
The responsibilities of a pipeline welding inspector are to ensure compliance with all safety standards and regulations during the construction of a gas or water pipeline. Your duties include monitoring compliance for the activities involved with laying and welding pipes and the maintenance of the finished product. You review plans, inspect welding calibrations, look over materials and welding equipment, monitor heating values, document findings, file reports, and test systems before approving. You assist with pre-welding by checking the environment and confirming cutting methods, joint positions, and welder settings. A pipeline welding inspector is responsible for approving buildings and pipelines for public use.
