 Desulfurization

The desulphurisation process (see CRUDE OIL TREATMENT) takes place in washing towers (stripping) where a series of plates with bubbling bells are installed, communicating through internal passages called weirs.
The sour crude oil enters from the upper inlet and, passing through the plates, comes into direct contact with the sweet gas, which bubbles in the oil, with the consequence that reduces its hydrogen sulphide content.
For maximum efficiency, the operating pressure should be as low as possible (lower the pressure, lower will be the gas content dissolved in a liquid.
The process is also favoured by relatively high temperatures, even generally the oil is not heated to avoid losses due to evaporation of light hydrocarbons. Fig.17 represents the drawing of a desulphurization tower, the drawing of a single plate is shown in Fig.18, and Fig.19 represents the operating drawing of a stripping tower.
