JUPITER® Model JM4 - MAGNETOSTRICTIVE LEVEL TRANSMITTER

JM4-511A-310 + 2CH-00AN-F01-00-392

The JUPITER® Model JM4 transmitter operates on the magnetostrictive principle, using the Time-of-Flight method for level measurement. The device sends a low-energy electronic pulse down a magnetostrictive wire within a probe. A permanent magnet inside a float on the liquid level intersects the wire, generating a magnetic field. This interaction creates a mechanical wave that travels up the wire to a sensor, which measures the time it takes for the wave to arrive. The system converts this time-of-flight data into an accurate liquid level reading.

Step-by-Step Working Principle

  1. Pulse Generation: The electronics assembly generates a low-energy electrical pulse.
  2. Pulse Travel: This pulse travels down the length of the magnetostrictive wire inside the probe at the speed of light.
  3. Float Interaction: The float, with its integrated permanent magnets, is positioned at the liquid's surface. Its magnetic field intersects the wire at that specific location.
  4. Wave Creation: The interaction between the passing electrical pulse and the float's magnetic field creates a localized mechanical disturbance (or acoustic wave) in the wire.
  5. Wave Propagation: This mechanical wave travels up the magnetostrictive wire at a constant, sound-speed rate.
  6. Detection: A piezoelectric sensor at the top of the probe detects the mechanical wave.
  7. Time Measurement: A timer precisely measures the elapsed time from when the initial electrical pulse was sent to when the mechanical wave was detected.
  8. Level Calculation: The electronics and software interpret this time-of-flight data and perform calculations to determine the liquid level.
  9. Output: The resulting liquid level data is then transmitted as an analog or digital signal.
