The OPTIWAVE 6400 C works on the Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) radar principle, transmitting a radar signal that sweeps in frequency. This signal reflects off the product surface, and its time delay is measured. The difference between the transmitted and received frequencies is proportional to the distance to the product, which is calculated using a Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) to determine the level, volume, and mass of solids in a vessel.

How the OPTIWAVE 6400 C Works

  1. Signal Transmission: The OPTIWAVE 6400 C emits a high-frequency radar signal from its antenna.
  2. Frequency Sweep: The frequency of this transmitted signal increases linearly over time, a process known as frequency modulation.
  3. Reflection: The radar wave travels to the surface of the product (solids) and reflects back to the antenna.
  4. Time Delay: The reflected signal returns after a time delay, which is directly related to the distance to the product surface. 
  5. Frequency Difference: Because the transmitted signal's frequency is constantly changing, the frequency of the received signal will be different from the transmitted signal at any given moment. 
  6. Fast Fourier Transform (FFT): The difference in frequency between the transmitted and received signals is calculated and then transformed into a frequency spectrum using an FFT.
  7. Distance Calculation: The frequency difference (Δf) in the spectrum is proportional to the time delay, and thus to the distance (d) to the product surface (t = 2d/c, where c is the speed of light).
  8. Level Calculation: The measured distance from the radar to the product surface is subtracted from the total height of the tank to calculate the product level.
