An ABB positioner works by comparing the control signal to the actual valve position, using a mechanical feedback mechanism like a cam and lever. Based on this comparison, it adjusts the pneumatic pressure to the actuator to move the valve to the commanded position. For digital positioners, internal controllers like PID loops are used to precisely calculate the required air pressure, which is then converted from an electrical signal (e.g., 4-20mA) into a pneumatic output.
Positioners available with or without HART protocol. In some cases where the positioner response needs to be almost instantaneous (without delays), the positioner without the HART protocol is much better. Unfortunately, the Hart protocol reduces the positioner's response by a few milliseconds. For some device like anti-surge valve is forbiden to use it.
