A Fisher positioner works on the principle of feedback control, continuously comparing a control signal to the actual valve position. It receives a control signal (e.g., 4-20 mA or pneumatic) representing the desired valve position, then uses a separate, higher-pressure air supply to adjust the pneumatic actuator to move the valve stem. A feedback mechanism, often using a cam and linkage, provides information to the positioner about the valve's current position, allowing it to precisely adjust the air pressure to the actuator until the actual position matches the desired position.
