Metso positioners work on the force balance or torque balance principle, using a pneumatic or electro-pneumatic signal to control a valve's position with high accuracy. A feedback spring provides a force proportional to the valve's position, which is compared to the force from the incoming control signal. When the forces are unbalanced, a pilot valve shifts to direct air to the actuator, moving the valve until the forces are equal again, which means the valve has reached the desired position.
