KROHNE guided radar transmitters work by using the Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR) principle, where they send low-power, high-frequency pulses along a probe submerged in the process media. When a pulse hits the liquid's surface, part of its energy is reflected back to the device, and the transmitter calculates the level by measuring the time difference between sending the pulse and receiving the reflection.

KROHNE OPTIWAVE radar level transmitters work on the frequency-modulated continuous wave (FMCW) principle, emitting a high-frequency radar signal that increases in frequency during measurement. This signal reflects off the surface of the liquid or solid, and the time delay is used to calculate the distance to the surface. The frequency difference (\(\Delta f\)) between the transmitted and received signal is directly proportional to this distance, which is then converted into a level measurement.

Advantages   Disadvantages 
  • Non-contact measurement: Radar transmitters provide a non-contact method, which is beneficial for corrosive or abrasive materials.
  • High accuracy: They offer high accuracy and reliability, even in challenging conditions like foam, vapor, or turbulent surfaces.
  • Versatile installation: Non-contact FMCW radar can measure through closed tank roofs and some types of grids and sieves, which is ideal for applications where cutting into a tank is not possible or desirable.
  • Minimal disturbance: Some KROHNE models, particularly those using flush-mounted lens antennas, can be installed on small nozzles, allowing for a "dead zone" (area where measurement is not possible) as small as a few millimeters, enabling the tank to be filled almost to the antenna.
  • Maintenance-free: Some models, like the OPTIFLEX 7200, are maintenance-free, reducing long-term costs.
 
  • Cost: Installation and maintenance costs can be high due to the need for specialized expertise and potential long-term maintenance.
  • Substance limitations: Accuracy can be affected by the dielectric constant of the material. Substances with a low dielectric constant or a highly agitated surface can make measurement difficult.
  •  Guided wave radar probe limitations: For guided wave radar (GWR) with probe versions, there are risks of leaks at the installation point, and the tank may need to be emptied for maintenance or if the probe needs to be removed.
  • Antenna or probe build-up: With some models, material can adhere to the probe or antenna, requiring cleaning to ensure accurate readings.
